Accreditation for iapp-certified professionals: This event is eligible for up to 12 IAPP CPE credits. Those requesting credit must fill out the online CPE application form and also submit supporting documentation, such as an agenda.

Accreditation for Orde van Vlaamse Balies: 18 points for 3-day conference (6pt/day).

Accreditation for Ordre des barreaux francophones et germanophone: 6 points per day (18 in total for 3 days).

CPDP has grown steadily over the last 4 years. It has the most ambitious  agenda so far with 12 panels, a pre-conference, a philosophical reading panel and a PhD-evening. In addition the 2011 edition includes 2 one-day events on ‘eHealth’ and surveillance and law enforcement, and a round table on body scanners. In total more than 150 speakers will contribute.

The conference takes place the same week as the 4th annual European  Privacy Day (Friday 28th January 2011), which will see the organisation of a series of events around Brussels with the participation of the Vrije  Universiteit Brussel. Furthermore CPDP is organising a range of side-events, which involve members of the CPDP Scientific Committee.

Pecha Kucha Evening, Privacy Party, Political debates will be the social events around CPDP 2011.

Multidisciplinary Privacy Award

Please be aware of the changed conditions for the 'Multidisciplinary Privacy Award':

"Privacy research needs to be pursued by the researchers representing diverse disciplines in technology, natural and social science as well as economics, law and political studies. To highlight the importance of multidisciplinary research in privacy, a multidisciplinary privacy award for the best multi-disciplinary paper in privacy will be debuted at the conference. Outstanding papers authored by researchers from diverse disciplines, such as law, computer sciences, social sciences or economic sciences, will be considered for the multidisciplinary privacy award by an international award committee. The prize consists of a cheque for $1000 and will be awarded during the CPDP conference. In addition the winners will also be funded to attend the conference. For the paper to be considered for the award it has to be a multidisciplinary paper written in English on privacy and/or data protection accepted for publication or published in 2010. Papers submitted and accepted for the CPDP conference can also be marked by the authors to be considered for the multidisciplinary privacy award."

It is with great sadness that we learnt that one of the founding members of the CPDP conference, Prof. Dr. Andreas Pfitzmann, has suddenly passed away. Andreas was head of the privacy and data security group at the Technische Universität Dresden and a leading specialist on privacy. He will be sadly missed. A commemorative moment will be organised at the conference.

looking at body scanners

In an opinion piece in the newspaper De Standaard Paul De Hert asserts that surveillance technologies such as body scanners, if applied in a privacy-sensitive way and not implemented haphazardly, need not necessarily mean a violation of our rights (Opinion De Standaard, Jan 06, 2010). Mark Salter, a Canadian expert in airport security, even claims that body scanners actually enhance your privacy! (Opinion in the Globe and Mail, Jan. 06, 2010).
However the privacy discussion tends to overshadow other issues. In some cases these issues can even be the result of privacy-protecting measures. Firstly children (younger than 18 years) are not allowed to be scanned as child protection laws in several countries state that it “is illegal to create an indecent image or a pseudo-image of a child”; one of the consequences of this is that the suicide bombers might get younger.
Another issue that arises with body scanners is, that to protect the privacy of passengers, not everyone will be scanned; people can opt-out, except those who are deemed suspicious on the basis of certain characteristics such as religion and ethnicity. In other words the problem of body scanners implemented as such becomes a problem of profiling, which has its own privacy issues and tends to result in additional social sorting.
Both issues have been overlooked in recent discussions about body scanners.

... just one month to the CPDP!

It was one of these rare and precious sunny days in Brussels when we held the first organisation meeting of CPDP 2009. All the following work has been keeping such a warm and bright ambiance and infusing it into the CPDP program.
And I should say that even if today, just one month before CPDP, Brussels' fog seems on the edge of freezing, when I see the program, I feel warmer... And I think that the ambiance will get even warmer during the 2 intensive days of CPDP...

In order to get you acclimated with the most warmly and sunny conference of wintertime, we have decided to share this blog space with the speakers that want to post their ideas, messages, campaigns and news.
Just drop me an email with the text of your post and I'll publish it with your reference!
Everyone will be able to comment on your post, and if those debates start to work, we could open a discussion forum for CPDP 2010!

CPDP and the 3rd European DATA PROTECTION DAY

On 28 JANUARY 2009 the 3rd European DATA PROTECTION DAY is organised throughout Europe. It is an initiative of the Council of Europe with the support of the European Commission The aim of the Data Protection Day is to give European citizens the chance to understand what personal data is collected and processed about them and why, and what their rights are with respect to this processing. They should also be made aware of the risks inherent and associated with the illegal mishandling and unfair processing of their personal data.

The objective of the Data Protection Day is to inform and educate the public at large as to their day-to-day rights, but it may also provide data protection professionals with the opportunity of meeting data subjects. On the website of the Council of Europe there is a call to organise events all over Europe to raise awareness on data protection and inform citizens of their rights and of good practices, thereby enabling them to exercise these rights more effectively.

CDPD has taken up this task and organised a large public event on Friday 16th, in Brussels. Being ourselves dull academics we asked a team of creative people to put together a Pecha Kucha (a public debate formula sweeping through the world landscape as an ideal format for the citizens of today’s world to discuss and interact). We invited artists, intellectuals, policy makers, designers and even some academics to take the floor. A DJ will check our privacy vibes afterward and I am already checking out my moves and fashionable shoes.

I do not know who is precisely behind the European data protection days, but I would love it to be informed about the precise date a bit earlier. There is no problem in moving CDPD 2010 from the third week of January to the fourth week of January.

Welcome to CPDP 2009!!!

Wonderful, the second conference is taking up speed!
This time a bigger ambition is driving us: to bring together the interpretive community that has been constructed (better: that has constructed itself) around the principles of data protection. This kind of community is very divers and does not respond in the same way to data protection challenges. However, what they share is the terminology and the method of data protection. I hope that everybody present behaves and takes time to celebrate first being in one physical space. We will need many more CDPD conferences to find out whether common responses are possible.
I do not regret being very pessimistic about that.
